ARTIST, AUTHOR, EDUCATOR

Um yes, hello!

Hi, I’m Geo from Sauk City, Wisconsin! I wear many hats—artist, author, and teacher—but I’m also a TikTok and Instagram creator with over 2 million combined followers. Before my accidental internet fame, I spent my entire career in art education and nonprofit work. I'm excited to announce the Pre-Order for my Spooky Rivers: 25 Strange and Mysterious Rivers that Snake Across Our Planet which is being released on September 15th, 2026! It’s the sequel my New York Times best selling book Spooky Lakes: 25 Strange and Mysterious Lakes that Dot Our Planet. Both books perfectly blend my love for science, history, art, and all things strange and wild. The rivers and lakes featured in the books aren’t spooky because of ghosts or ghouls, but rather due to natural phenomena, scientific oddities, human interactions, environmental disasters, and the mysteries lurking beneath the surface.

Spooky Rivers: 25 Strange and Mysterious that Snake Across our Planet!

Available for pre-order! Comes out September 15th, 2026

A companion to Spooky Lakes, a New York Times and Indiebound bestseller!

Take the plunge into the strangest, spookiest, and most fascinating rivers around the world (if you dare) in this illustrated nonfiction book from New York Times bestselling author, TikTok star, and educator Geo Rutherford!

Rivers are Earth’s restless travelers—carving landscapes, shaping history, and holding secrets. Some are forces of destruction, sweeping away everything in their path, while others are lifelines, sustaining civilizations for millennia. And some are both, bringing prosperity and devastation in equal measure. From deadly whirlpools to lost cities submerged beneath their waves, these rivers challenge everything we think we know about the natural world. There are rivers that catch fire, rivers that boil, and rivers so deep they seem bottomless. Some slither beneath the ground you stand on, while others vanish without a trace.

In October 2020, I started the “Spooky Lake Month”, series on TikTok. Each video tells a spooky story about a lake on this planet in under three minutes. Everyday for the month of October, I cover a new topic ranging from Lake Nicaragua, a freshwater lake with uninvited bull sharks, to Lake Karachay, a radioactive lake used as a dumping ground for nuclear waste in the 1950s. Spooky Lakes are not about conspiracy theories or the supernatural but are instead an opportunity to learn about natural phenomena, historical events, environmental disasters and strange happenings surrounding lakes and other hydrology. Thank you for all the support on this series, it has a special place in my heart and it's changed my life. Good soup!!
